As an ex-jockey who still works with racehorses in Saratoga Springs, NY, I feel an obligation to share some secrets with those looking to lose weight quickly. Although jockeys have a poor reputation for losing weight through bingeing and purging or starving ourselves, the majority of us have always turned to healthier means.
The sweatbox is the most common way for us to shed pounds. For those of us who do not have a sauna, I recommend soaking in a tub of water as hot as you can tolerate. If you really want to work up a good sweat, drink hot liquids like peppermint tea to induce perspiration. Also, during exercise it helps to wear heavier clothes. It can not be stressed how essential sweating is to losing weight.
Avoid dairy. You will never catch a jockey consuming milk, ice cream or heavy cheese. If you absolutely must drink a little milk, be sure to stick with skim.
Heavy carbs and starches are another no-no. White breads and pastas are to be avoided. Stick with lean meats, vegetables (especially darker green varieties) and fruits. However, do remember that fruits carry a high percentage of water and water weight generally contributes to those last stubborn pounds.
Finally, I cannot stress enough how important common sense is. If you know it's bad for you, don't do it. It does not take a ton of willpower to stay away from fatty, high-calorie foods. And definitely exercise at least the minimum recommended 20 minutes a day three times a week. Remember these guidelines and feel more confident about your body by the end of this week. |
